South Ribble Leisure Centres are undergoing a multimillion-pound improvements project, which will make greener, more energy efficient leisure centres, and will give them long-needed modernisation and upgrades.
The first stage, which is now almost complete, has been the decarbonisation and infrastructure phase, which has involved huge improvements to the infrastructure that keeps the centres operational and energy efficient.
The next phase is modernisation and improvements across all four sites. We are dedicated to providing you with high-quality leisure centres at incredible value locally and this is the start of an incredibly exciting period of improvements for the leisure centres, allowing for modernisation and energy efficiency improvements which will enhance your user experience.

What work is currently underway?
As you may know, our multimillion-pound leisure centre improvements project is working at pace, and we are now at an exciting time in our programme.
Leyland Leisure Centre
The next stage at Leyland Leisure Centre includes the final phase of our decarbonisation programme. This will fully connect our air source heat pump to help future-proof the centre with cleaner, greener energy.
We are:
- replacing the internal and external pool windows
- completing the dry-side changing rooms
- starting work on replacing and extending the pool changing facilities
- beginning our gym refurbishment
- instaling a virtual Les Mills class set-up for additional fitness class options
To enable this work to take place, Leyland Leisure Centre is temporarily fully closed from 5-11 May to allow essential improvement works to take place. We have been able to partially reopen from 12 May (with the squash court, dance studio and sports hall available weekdays after 5.30pm). The group fitness timetable, including all your favourite classes, the sports hall and squash courts will all be available for use and sessions can be booked online.
Please note that works are continuing over the coming weeks and areas of the centre are not accessible, this includes the reception area. The entrance to the centre throughout this limited period of opening will be through the office door to the front and centre of the building. This will also be the exit after your activity. Bookings for available classes can be made online for evening classes or courts. Please note that changing facilities are not yet available so please attend your activity ready to participate. There is a toilet available to use on site but these facilities are again limited.
The centre is scheduled to reopen for all activities on 6 June.
We completely understand that this closure may be inconvenient, and we’re sorry for the short notice. Complex projects such as this which rely on multiple external partners often means that things move very quickly and this closure is essential to ensure that the work can be completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.
What are my membership options?
Your health and fitness membership gives you access to all South Ribble Leisure Centres. You’re welcome to use any of our other sites while Leyland is closed. If you’d like to speak to us about your membership options, please email leylandleisure@southribble.gov.uk and include your contact number. We're also working hard to move as many classes as possible to our other centres. Updated timetables will be available on our website shortly.
What will happen with my child’s swimming lessons?
Unfortunately, swimming lessons will not run at Leyland during the closure.
- If you pay by direct debit, due to timings the 1 May direct debit will still be taken, but we will reduce payments in June, July and August to account for missed sessions.
- If you’ve paid in advance for a block of 10 lessons, we’ll freeze your account and add the missed sessions once lessons resume.
- If you are interested in temporarily attending lessons at another site, please let us know and we will assist where possible.

Bamber Bridge Leisure Centre
Our wet-side changing rooms are undergoing refurbishment. While this work is happening there are some temporary changes to how swimming sessions run, and we really appreciate your understanding during this time. Here’s what you need to know:
- The pool will remain fully open during the works.
- Most poolside changing areas closed: For the next 4-6 weeks, most poolside changing rooms will be closed while work is underway. There will be a small number of cubicles still open, plus our dry-side changing facilities will be available for use
- Come swim-ready: We ask that you arrive ready to swim (costume under clothes)
- Where to store your belongings: There will be some lockers available by the pool for your belongings. We are also providing containers for customers to carry their possessions to and from the pool and dry-side changing rooms.
- After your swim: A small number of pool-side changing rooms will be available, plus our dry-side changing rooms, which have showers and toilets are available to use. Swimmers should use a towel or robe to cover themselves as they walk through reception area to the changing rooms (separate male and female), approximately 20 meters from the poolside. As part of this temporary arrangement, you’ll pass through reception to access the pool, so we recommend wearing flip-flops or similar footwear.
- Please note: When our schools are using the dry-side changing rooms, these will be temporarily closed to other users.
What's happening next?
Leyland Leisure Centre
We will be:
- creating new pool changing areas, toilets and showers
- extending and redesigning the entrance and reception area
- replacing pool glazing and the pool cover
- installing new dry-side changing rooms (work currently taking place)
- updating gym equipment.
Bamber Bridge Leisure Centre
We will be:
- creating new pool changing areas, toilets and showers (work currently taking place)
- extending and redesigning the entrance and reception area
- updating gym equipment.
Penwortham Leisure Centre
We will be:
- creating new pool changing areas, toilets and showers
- updating the reception area
- updating gym equipment.
South Ribble Tennis and Fitness Centre
We will be:
- resurfacing the tennis courts with a high-quality new finish - this work is now complete
- updating gym equipment.
