Fit for the future
We’re improving your leisure centres. A once in a generation investment by South Ribble Borough Council
South Ribble Leisure Centres are undergoing a multimillion-pound improvements project, which will make greener, more energy efficient leisure centres, and will give them long-needed modernisation and upgrades.
The first stage, which is now complete, has been the decarbonisation and infrastructure phase - involving huge improvements to the infrastructure that keeps the centres operational and energy efficient.
The next phase is modernisation and improvements across all four sites. We are dedicated to providing you with high-quality leisure centres at incredible value locally and this is the start of an incredibly exciting period of improvements for the leisure centres, allowing for modernisation and energy efficiency improvements which will enhance your user experience.
Thank you for your ongoing patience and understanding while the work takes place.

Latest news
As you may know, our multimillion-pound leisure centre improvements project is working at pace, and we are now at an exciting time in our programme.
Leyland Leisure Centre
As part of our ongoing improvement works, Leyland Leisure Centre is seeing modernisation works across the centre.
What’s been happening at Leyland Leisure Centre:
- Fully connecting our new air source heat pump (work complete)
- Replacing internal and external pool windows (work complete)
- Replacing pool-surround tiling (work complete)
- Completing the dry-side changing rooms (work complete)
- Replacing and extending the pool changing facilities
- Refurbishment of the gym (work complete)
- Installing a virtual Les Mills class set-up (work complete)
How will the swimming pool operate when re-opened
The swimming pool reopened on 19 July. The pool changing rooms and reception area are closed and there is a temporary entrance to the building (clearly signposted).
While work is continuing across the centre, there are some temporary changes:
- The dryside changing rooms can be used by swimmers.
- There will be limited lockers available - storage containers have been provided that public can utilise.
- Anti-slip matting will be in used throughout the centre – customers must dry off before leaving poolside and appropriate footwear must be worn.
- If possible, please come pool-ready with swimwear under clothes.
- The disabled changing area will not be available until the wetside changing refurb has been completed. Whilst this may cause some disruption for some of our users, should any users need assistance getting from the dryside changing rooms to poolside, a member of staff will be more than happy to assist. The pool hoist will still be available for our programmed swim sessions.
What are my membership options?
Your health and fitness membership gives you access to all South Ribble Leisure Centres. You’re welcome to use any of our other sites while Leyland pool is closed. If this is not convenient and you'd like to speak to us about your membership options, please email leylandleisure@southribble.gov.uk and include your contact number.
What will happen with my child’s missed swimming lessons, from pool closure?
- Swimming lessons did not run at Leyland during the pool closure.
- If you pay by direct debit, we reduced payments to account for missed sessions.
- If you’ve paid in advance for a block of 10 lessons, we’ll froze your account during the closure and added the missed sessions once lessons resumed.
If you have any questions, please email leylandleisure@southribble.gov.uk and include your contact number.
Bamber Bridge Leisure Centre
We are pleased to say that our wet-side changing rooms are now open for use! We are still putting some finishing touches to the space but they are open for use as normal.
Work is ongoing to extend and improve our reception area. Due to works in our reception area, this part of the building will be unavailable for approximately three weeks from 22 September. Due to access, during this time our swimming pool programme will be slightly reduced, and there will be a temporary entrance for swimming sessions.
We have also started work on our dry changing rooms, so these are closed for customers while we complete the works.
Our gym has now reopened after refurbishment!
Penwortham Leisure Centre
Work to modernise the swimming pool changing rooms at Penwortham Leisure Centre began on 30 June.
- Dry-side changing rooms will remain available
- The swimming pool will remain open as normal
- Reception area improvements will follow, with dates to be confirmed
- Please can swimmers come swim-ready with swimwear worn underneath clothes for convenience. A dry-robe or towel should be worn for returning to the changing rooms after your swim (and suitable footwear if required).
Due to the ongoing modernisation works, it has become necessary to close Penwortham Leisure Centre between 15-21 September, with planned reopening on 22 September. During this short closure, we will be:
- Starting the gym refurbishment (the main gym and ladies gym will be closed throughout, continuing into October)
- Replacing the reception desk
- Replacing areas of flooring
- Working on the final stages of the pool changing rooms.
We apologise for any inconvenience while we are improving your centres.
